Woodford Youth A 22 - 0 Flitwick Eagles First Round
Once again Woodford Youth U14's have been selected to represent our local Lions Club in their annual national football competition. Last year Frank and his U14's made it to the quarter finals, narrowly missing out on a semi final place by a single goal in extra time. Last year's U14's performed brilliantly and both we and Lions' Secretary Paul Chakravarti, hope we can emulate their performances and with a bit of luck, progress even further.
There are over 900 Lions Clubs throughout the British Isles and Ireland. Through their youth programmes, each is dedicated to providing challenges and opportunities for youngsters that they would not otherwise enjoy.
The semi-finals and Final of this national competition are held at prestigious stadiums, either FA Professional league Clubs or Conference Clubs. Previous venues have been Nottingham Forest, Port Vale, Walsall and Swindon Town. The Competition is sanctioned each year by the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish Football Associations and by UEFA.
This provides a wonderful opportunity for a team to play against opponents they may never have even heard of and also provides a clear measure of what level one league really is at relative to another.
The first round concluded in an emphatic win for our boys, breaking the newly set club goalscoring record of 21 goals (held by Frank and the U15's). We await news of our next opponents and look forward to the next round. Well done lads!
